Highlighting Headweight is a technical training program presented by Geoffrey Hearn and demonstrated by World Professional Standard Champions Mirko Gozzoli & Alessia Betti. The course focuses on one of the most subtle yet important elements of International Standard Ballroom—the effective use of headweight to improve movement quality, balance, body alignment, rhythm, and partner coordination.
Rather than teaching complete routines, the program examines how headweight influences the overall appearance and character of each dance. Through demonstrations and detailed technical analysis, dancers can observe how controlled head movement supports smoother transitions, better posture, and more expressive dancing across the Standard style.
The course covers four International Standard dances:
- Waltz
- Tango
- Slow Foxtrot
- Quickstep
For each dance, three figure groups are presented using a progressive learning format:
- Demonstration with music
- Teaching count
- Step-by-step figure breakdown
- Slow-motion technical analysis
This structured approach makes it easier to understand how headweight changes throughout different movements and how it contributes to balance, rhythm, movement quality, and the characteristic style of each dance.
