The Ultimate Ballroom Album 14 – L’Italiano

L’Italiano combines a song-led Slow Foxtrot selection with lively Quicksteps, lyrical Waltzes and a varied Tango finish. Toto Cutugno supplies the title song, while Paul Anka, Robin McKelle, Secret Garden and Gotan Project also appear in the 40-track programme. The album offers Standard dancers a mixture of popular-song adaptations and orchestral repertoire rather than one uniform musical voice.

Popular songs take an important place in the first disc of L’Italiano. Paul Anka’s Jump and Smells Like Teen Spirit sit within Slow Foxtrot alongside Toto Cutugno’s title song and Fever, credited to Ray Charles & Natalie Cole. The Quickstep section follows with performers including Clare Teal, In Grid and Liza Minnelli, continuing the variety of vocal choices.

On disc 2, Secret Garden appears twice in a Waltz programme that also includes Schubert Serenade, Una Furtiva Lagrima and Open Arms. Three Viennese Waltzes precede seven Tangos, where Mandragora Orchestra and Gotan Project provide separate strands of the repertoire. For dancers selecting music by both category and personal taste, the album offers recognisable songs alongside classical and Tango-associated titles, all kept within their documented dance groupings.
