Latin Characterization – Cha Cha is a distinctive instructional program featuring Paul Killick & Hanna Karttunen, designed for Intermediate to Advanced Latin dancers who already know the commonly used competition figures and want to develop the character, emotion, attitude, and expression of Cha Cha.
Unlike conventional instructional videos, Paul and Hanna do not concentrate primarily on teaching new steps. Instead, they explore the inner feeling and man-woman characterization behind each action, explaining what they imagine, how they feel, and how those ideas influence the movement they produce.
The program contains two Cha Cha groups. Paul and Hanna first demonstrate each group together and then break down the material, including explanations of the steps and separate Lady’s timing and Man’s timing. Multiple viewing angles are provided to make the movement and timing easier to observe.
Particular emphasis is placed on the acting and characterization element within each group. In this sense, the program functions as much like a workshop in performance and acting as it does a dance lesson, helping experienced dancers explore how intention and interaction between partners can give choreography greater personality and meaning.
The groups are also demonstrated to music, including a performance to different music, allowing viewers to observe how characterization and expression can work with changing musical interpretations.
